Sports: Singapore Players for Olympic Esports Series 2023 Finals Announced

Visitors to the inaugural Olympic Esports Week (OEW) can look forward to seeing Singapore players compete at the pinnacle of virtual sports at the first in-person finals of the Olympic Esports Series. Today, 14 players for 6 virtual sports were unveiled in a ceremony at the OEW community activations in Singapore Sports Hub. They will compete alongside more than 100 international players for the coveted title of Olympic Esports Series winner across 10 virtual sports.

Mr Alvin Tan, Co-chair of OEW 2023 Steering Committee, Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth & Trade and Industry, and Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, President of Singapore National Olympic Council, attended the ceremony and presented an OEW 2023 polo t-shirt to the Singapore players. They also tried out some of the virtual sports such as Gran Turismo and Tennis Clash that will feature as part of Olympic Esports Week at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre from 22 to 25 June 2023.

“It is an honour to represent Singapore in the finals of Olympic Esports Series 2023. Competing on home ground makes it more meaningful as my friends and family will be able to watch me and my teammates play against some of the best players. I’ve been practising Taekwondo since I was five years old, and I am looking forward to competing in a new virtual format at the upcoming finals of the Olympic Esports Series. The Olympic Esports Week is also an opportunity for the local audience to learn more about esports and active virtual sports,” said 14-year-old Jadon Yu – the youngest player to be fielded for Team Singapore.

Co-chair of the Local Organising Committee for OEW 2023, Mr Mark Chay, said: “We are proud to unveil our players who will be flying the Singapore flag high at the finals of the Olympic Esports Series 2023. Our local esports players will be able to raise their profiles within the fraternity and cement their arrival on the international esports stage as they compete alongside top players from around the world. The chance to be a part of the first-ever Olympic Esports Week will no doubt be a treasured memory of their respective esports journeys.”

Finalists for the Olympic Esports Series were selected following a rigorous process led by the respective game publishers, International Federations, and local National Sports Associations. To date, five titles have completed their selections and final qualifications are still going on for the remaining virtual sports.

This weekend also marks the mid-point of the 50-day countdown to Olympic Esports Week 2023.
