The 16 teams competing at the Women’s World Floorball Championship 2023 are locked in and ready for battle, with just one day to go before the competition starts at the Singapore Sports Hub. After the official team training sessions at the OCBC Arena on Friday (1 December), the team captains gathered for a photo shoot at Muscat Street. The Women’s World Floorball Championship 2023 will take place from 2-10 December at the OCBC Arena and the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
World No. 1 and defending WFC champions Sweden are determined to retain their title, though captain Ida Sundberg is prepared for a tough challenge from their opponents. The 29-year-old, who will be playing in her fourth WFC, said: “We want to do everything we can to keep the gold in Sweden and I feel we’re really prepared for that. But we know that it’s going to be really tough and we really need to play our best. The opponents are really good as well so we have a big challenge in front of us, but we are ready. We do feel some pressure – we have won the gold the last eight times – but we are used to that and we are good to handle that.”
Fuelled by a relaxing day on the beach on Sentosa and a scenic cable car ride, she added: “We had our first training on Thursday and… it was a good practice and we managed to do a good practice on Friday as well, so I feel that we are ready for the tournament to start now.” Team USA defender Tiffany Gerber, who was part of the team that competed in the 2005 WFC also in Singapore, is excited to create new memories in the Lion City. She said: “It feels good to be back. I remember playing against Singapore in the semi-finals of the B Division in front of so many spectators in 2005. That was the best game, the most special game I’ve played with Team USA and that was really fun.
“This year, we have a really fun team with so many young players. I’m really excited about having lots of young players coming up and sharing my experience with them. We’re just going to take it game by game, do our best and see what we can achieve.” The 2023 edition is just the second time that the WFC is taking place outside of Europe – Singapore hosted the WFC in 2005 as well.
Says Mr. Kenneth Ho, Chairman, Women’s World Floorball Championship 2023: “We’re proud to present the Singapore team at next month’s Women’s World Floorball Championships 2023. The team comprises a good mix of experienced players and newer faces and regardless of their level of experience, they are all eager to give their best performance on home ground. The players, coaches and officials have been training hard for the championships. We hope our fellow Singaporeans join us at the Singapore Sports Hub to cheer on the team and enjoy some spectacular floorball matches.”
The Women’s World Floorball Championship 2023 will take place from 2nd to 10th December at the OCBC Arena and the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Full schedule, more information and event updates available here
