Sports: Singapore to Face Malaysia in three-match test series this February

The Singapore National Netball team will be back in action this February as they take on cross-border rival Malaysia in a three-match test series scheduled for 15, 17 and 18 February 2024. All three matches are open to the public and free to attend, with the 15th February match to take place at OCBC Arena Hall 3 (limited standing spots), while the other two games on 17th  and 18th February will take place at Our Tampines Hub.

This showdown marks the first time since September 2022 that Singapore and Malaysia have come up against one another. The last encounter between the two nations saw Singapore triumph over Malaysia by 13 goals (54-41) during the semi-finals of the 2022 Asian Netball Championships in Singapore.

The Singapore Opens team competing in the Singapore-Malaysia test series remains largely unchanged from the team that featured in the 2023 Mirxes Nations Cup, except for the additions of defender K. Mishalenee and shooter Goh Wei Ping, following the retirements of stalwarts Charmaine Soh and Kimberly Lim.

Vice-captain Aqilah Andin, currently on 98 caps, is on the brink of making history during the test series as she aims to make her 100th appearance for Singapore. Andin, who earned her first cap at 16, expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s been a dream of mine to earn 100 caps, and I’m excited to have the chance to achieve this feat during this Singapore-Malaysia test series. I can’t wait to share this milestone with my teammates in front of my family, friends, and incredible fans.”

National coach Annette Bishop expressed the team’s anticipation for the challenge ahead, saying, “The upcoming test series against Malaysia provides an excellent opportunity for our team to measure up against a formidable rival and build momentum for the upcoming competitions.”

The Singapore-Malaysia test series is a prelude to a packed schedule for the Singapore National Netball Team in 2024, which includes the 2024 Asian Netball Championships, the Mirxes Nations Cup, and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

The three-match test series is scheduled for 15, 17 and 18 February 2024. All three matches are open to the public and free to attend, with the 15th February match to take place at OCBC Arena Hall 3 (limited standing spots), while the other two games on 17th  and 18th February will take place at Our Tampines Hub.
