Super 24 is the world’s first mega crew dance competition that features a unique format in which teams of 24 dancers perform a 90-second routine on an 8m x 8m stage as judges watch from all four sides. With a strong emphasis on teamwork and no restriction on genres, Super 24 is the ultimate test of creativity and unity for all the competing teams.

Other than watching the competing teams battle it out, spectators were also treated to a special performance by singer-songwriter Sky Shen and former J-pop idol Estelle Fly. In collaboration with Singapore Pools, their performance aims to promote diversity and inclusivity in the arts community. Sky, who has muscular dystrophy, is an artiste who tapped into his musicality at a young age and a strong disability advocate. He began writing lyrics aged 13 and posted videos of himself singing on YouTube. Shortly after in 2015, he was awarded the Youth Aspiration Award by the Society for the Physically Disabled (SDP). He has since performed at cafes, bars and corporate and community service events such as the Ministry of Social and Family Development Volunteer & Partner Awards 2021. In 2022, Sky also demonstrated his versatility and bilingualism through his debut EP “Wheel You Love Me?”, which contains songs in English and Mandarin.

Estelle, who previously made waves as former member of the Japanese idol group Sea*A, also demonstrated her renewed charm and energy as a singer. Estelle drops her highly anticipated new single this month, but she has also dipped her toes into other areas. She released the single “RISE” in collaboration with the Republic of Games in 2021, which was featured in The Sims 4, and also starred in 2023 social thriller “Alienated”.

“I’m super excited to be part of Singapore’s biggest dance competition. From cheering as an audience member to sharing the stage with such dedicated and passionate individuals, this is truly such an honour. Well done to all the amazing dancers near and far who have worked so hard to compete at Super 24!” said Estelle.

Sky echoed her sentiments saying: “The dances at Super24 have always been vibrant, innovative and diverse. It has been so exciting to watch youths from the region create and express themselves on stage, and to perform with Estelle for this event!”

Spectators also saw exclusive showcases by esteemed dance celebrities from South Korea, Japan and the United States. These dance icons are part of Super 24’s diverse panel of judges, which features well-known local and foreign dancers, including Waackxxxy, Momo Koyama, Larkin Poynton and Dylan Mayoral.

Twenty-four dancers will also get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of training under the guidance of veteran Super 24 judge Mayoral, who has worked with many international stars including Rita Ora, Calvin Harris and BTS. Mayoral will stage a captivating non-competitive performance for these dancers, who were selected through an audition in June, that will incorporate Super 24’s trademark format.

South Korean star choreographer Jung Si-yeon, better known as Waackxxxy, is a member of the street dance crew Mannequeen and will be putting on display her famed explosive and intricate waacking (a genre of dance). Also bringing her signature hip-hop style to the table is Japanese sensation Koyama who has gained massive popularity after participating in several dance reality shows such as Street Woman Fighter Season 2 and Street Dance of China Season 4. Poynton, a multifaceted dance instructor with a diverse background in dance styles such as breaking, hip-hop and even ballet, will also be present to provide his expertise.

Kenny Low, the creator of Super 24 and founder of O School, said: “This year’s Super 24 has been nothing short of amazing. We broke boundaries with the number of teams we have and it was a joy to see all 74 teams across the three categories dance their hearts out on stage. We have seen many exciting and creative stories on stage this year and for me, it was a true celebration of dance. Every Super 24 touches my heart in different ways and this year is no different. It is always heartwarming to see so many people united by our shared passion for dance every single year and taking this homegrown competition to 11 editions. Everyone, from the dancers to the crew and volunteers working behind the scenes, has put in their 100 per cent to make this Super 24 a successful one and we are deeply appreciative of their efforts. I hope that it has been a memorable experience for all, as it has been for me. All this would not be possible also without support from our partners from Kallang Alive Sport Management, the National Arts Council and National Youth Council, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m very grateful for how far Super 24 has come. It is essentially a Singaporean story – a lot of people in a small space, but we always find ways to be creative and innovate and become a force to be reckoned with. I’m already looking forward to next year’s Super 24 and seeing what’s in store for us.”

Yazed Osman, Group Head, Events & Placemaking, Kallang Alive Sport Management said: “Our commitment is to make the Singapore Sports Hub a dynamic and inclusive shared space for our youth and all communities. We are delighted for the Singapore Indoor Stadium to once again be the official venue for Super 24, providing a platform for local and international dancers to showcase their talents to a wide audience. We have also taken in feedback from the dance community and installed mirrors around the precinct so that beyond a competition space, the Sports Hub can also be a practice ground for interest groups to gather and practise.”

Super 24 ran from 17th to 18th August 2024 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. More information available here
