Sports: 30-man squad from Singapore football team bound for Japan centralised training camp

The head coach of Singapore’s National “A” Team, Tsutomu Ogura, has called up 29 players for centralised training during the upcoming October international window beginning 7 October 2024. This camp forms part of the team’s ongoing preparations for the upcoming ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup in December and aims to further strengthen squad cohesion and tactical execution.

The 30th player, Kyoga Nakamura, has once again been invited to train with the Lions, having been part of the training camp during the September window.

Notably, Young Lions goalkeeper Aizil Yazid and Lion City Sailors striker Abdul Rasaq Akeem earn their first call-ups to the senior squad which also sees the return of Amirul Adli, Fairuz Fazli, Ryaan Sanizal, Raoul Suhaimi, Ryhan Stewart, Faris Ramli and Ikhsan Fandi. Shawal Anuar, Faizal Roslan, Nazrul Nazari, Syed Firdaus Hassan, and Iqbal Hussain are due to miss out through injuries.

The team will play training matches against three J1 League clubs as part of the training camp. These matches are expected to test the players’ tactical development and physical conditioning ahead of the Lions’ upcoming fixtures.

Ogura was clear as to what he expected out of the players for this window: “We are playing against top-tier J1 teams, but I don’t want the players to think too much about the opposition or give too much respect. We just need to focus on the performance targets we want to achieve during those games and deliver on those fronts.

“At these games, we want to see our players being able to play high-intensity football for a longer period than before. On the rest of the trip, we want to see a real commitment to our training sessions, and much more familiarity with the style of football we want for our Lions.

“At the end of the day we want to make Singapore fans proud of the spirit and the football their Lions play – and we are progressing well.”
