Sports: World Class Squash Action set for showdown at VITAGEN Singapore Squash Open 2024

Singapore squash fans are in for a treat as some of the world’s best players prepare to compete in the VITAGEN Singapore Squash Open, which kicks off at the OCBC Arena on Tuesday.

The tournament will showcase three of the world’s top 10 men’s players and five of the world’s top 10 women’s players, alongside local wildcards Jerome Aw, Cassandra Ong, Samuel Kang, and Au Yeong Wai Yhann.

World No. 1 and defending champion Ali Farag will headline the men’s competition, while Egypt’s Hania El Hammamy, ranked third in the world, and Belgium’s world No. 5 and defending champion Nele Coll, are expected to bring their best to the courts.

Returning to the venue of his memorable victory last year, Farag is eager to replicate his winning form and notch his first win on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Squash Tour for the 2024-25 season.

“I’m so happy to be back here in Singapore to defend my title. It’s such a vibrant city and there’s a different feel to it. The memories of winning here last year make it even better.

“You head to every tournament trying to win it. It’s a very strong draw with many top players, so I just have to take it one step at a time,” said Farag.

Coll echoed Farag’s sentiments on the strength of the competition and emphasised her focus on staying in the moment as she aims to replicate her success in the Lion City.

“Like Ali, I also head to every tournament with the goal of winning. But I’m just trying to stay in the present moment and take it one match at a time. It’s a very strong draw but I’m really excited to get the week started,” said Coll.

For 24-year-old Hania El Hammamy, being the top seed is a challenge she’s eager to embrace, and she aims to deliver a performance that befits her status in front of the Singapore crowd.

“I haven’t been the number one seed in an event for so long. So, it’s a different challenge and it comes with a huge expectation. I’m excited to see how it feels to play as the top-seeded player again, and hopefully, I can do well,” said the 24-year-old Egyptian.

Singapore’s Head Coach, Jamie Brian Hickox, is optimistic about the local wildcards’ chances, believing they could pull off surprises against top-tier opponents if they play to their potential in front of the home crowd.

Speaking ahead of the tournament’s media session, where students from Northlight School were also introduced to squash through demonstrations and interactive sessions, Hickox remarked: “There’s a lot of very good things happening here in Singapore, starting with the support system. There are many positive signs. Our players have huge talent and determination. They are showing great promise and tons of positive energy.”

The VITAGEN Singapore Squash Open, with a prize purse of US$220,000, will take place at the OCBC Arena from Nov 19-24, showcasing 48 of the world’s top men’s and women’s squash players. Tickets and more information available here
