Sports: HSBC Singapore runs first rugby coaching clinic, ahead of the HSBC SVNS tournament in Singapore

HSBC extends its commitment to provide opportunities in sport for its communities all around the world at its first coaching clinic for young rugby fans in Singapore this week.

Led by former USA Rugby 7s captain and HSBC Global Ambassador, Abby Gustaitis, and current Great Britain Rugby Sevens captain, Harry Glover, the coaching clinic gave about 30 secondary school children the chance to learn from some of the world’s best players. A true ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience, the event was held on the pitch at the iconic National Stadium – home to some of Singapore’s biggest events in sports and entertainment, including the HSBC SVNS, which will also host its Singapore leg at the National Stadium from 5th – 6th April.

The event took place in partnership with The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF), an organisation which aims to support children from low-income families by providing financial assistance to help them through school.

Wong Kee Joo, CEO of HSBC Singapore, who attended the coaching clinic and met some of the children taking part, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the beneficiaries of the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund this once-in-a lifetime opportunity to learn from some of the sport’s most talented names. Rugby – and sport as a whole – is such an important tool for youths, teaching us skills and values which are enormously important in later life, such as teamwork, dedication and leadership. It is our privilege to be able to use the power of our international network in sport to inspire the next generation and give back to the community in a meaningful way.”

STSPMF said: “We are very grateful for the invaluable support from HSBC towards our cause, by providing this unique opportunity for our youths. These experiences broaden their perspectives and inspire them to dream.”

Abby Gustaitis, HSBC Global Ambassador, and one of the coaches for the clinic said: “Events like this are so important – both to show the kids what can be possible, and also to share the sport which has been my life for a decade. It was an honour and a lot of fun to be part of this event, and I’ll be keeping my eyes on the Singapore team in ten years or so – who knows, we may have found a future star!”

In addition to the rugby clinic, the children together with their parent will also be invited to catch the HSBC SVNS in Singapore and participate in the HSBC Fun Zone, an area specially created for HSBC customers. This event represents the latest chapter in HSBC’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for its global community, drawing on its rich pool of sports partnerships across rugby, golf, badminton, tennis and more – with more than 550,000 children around the world benefiting from its grassroots programmes so far.

Within Singapore, the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge in partnership with the Singapore Golf Association has been supporting young golfers since 2008 – with a number of its athletes going on to play professionally, including Shannon Tan, Gregory Foo, and James Leow to name just a few. Additionally, HSBC has run several local coaching clinics alongside its Badminton World Federation partnership, including one in collaboration with the Singapore Red Cross’ Young Hearts programme. This latest coaching clinic marks a new page in this story: HSBC’s first grassroots rugby event in Singapore.
