Sports: Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Chen Yu Fei crowned champions of KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2025

A memorable week at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2025 concluded in style, with Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn clinching his fourth title of the year in front of over 7,700 fans at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. China’s Chen Yu Fei also delivered a flawless performance to claim her first title in Singapore, a year after falling short in the finals.

Soon-to-be world No. 1 Vitidsarn continued his outstanding 2025 season by capturing his second-ever BWF Super 750 title of the year, sweeping past China’s Lu Guang Zu 21-6, 21-10 in just 37 minutes.

It was a composed and commanding performance from the Thai star, whose speed, defence, and precision left his opponent visibly frustrated. Vitidsarn, who is set to become the first Thai men’s singles player to top the world rankings when the BWF updates are released on Tuesday, showed exactly why he’s been the standout player on tour this year.

Vitidsarn said: “To play against a Chinese athlete, it’s never easy. It’s always tough. But I just tried my best to do whatever I could to win the match.

It’s a good thing that I’m now the world No. 1. Of course, there’s always pressure. But it’s a good kind of pressure. I’ve already said in the beginning that I want to win all tournaments, and that’s what I’m focused on now.”

China’s world No. 5 Chen turned in a clinical display to defeat compatriot Wang Zhi Yi 21-11, 21-11 and capture the KFF Singapore Badminton Open title, one year after finishing runner-up.

The former world No. 1 capped off a strong week that saw her oust defending champion and current world No. 1 An Se Young in the quarterfinals – a match many tipped as the toughest hurdle in her path to the trophy.

Chen said: “I’m really happy; truly very happy. The draw for this tournament wasn’t particularly favorable for me, and every match was a tough battle.

So, to be able to fight through one match at a time to the end was honestly beyond what I expected. I think that mindset of not putting too much pressure on myself helped. I felt more relaxed compared to before, and that allowed me to bring out more of my own game on the court.”

In the day’s only three-game match, Malaysia’s world No. 3 duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik rallied from a game down to edge South Korea’s world No. 10 pair Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae, winning 15-21, 21-18, 21-18 after 65 minutes. The win completes a trio of titles for the Malaysians this season, adding to their triumphs at the Badminton Asia Championships and Thailand Open.

In the women’s doubles, South Korea’s world No. 8 Kim Hye Jeong and Kong Hee Yong secured their third title of the season with a convincing 21-16, 21-14 win over Japan’s world No. 6 duo Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi. The title adds to their earlier victories this year at the Orleans Masters and Indonesia Masters.

Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran capped off a strong campaign in Singapore by capturing the mixed doubles title. The world No. 8 pair avenged their Thailand Open quarterfinal defeat by toppling Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet in the final, winning in straight games 21-16, 21-9. It marks their third title of the year after wins at the Malaysia Open and Thailand Masters.

Held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from 27 May to 1 June, the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2025 is a key stop on the BWF World Tour Super 750 series, offering a prize pool of US$1 million.
