Sports: XU, MALTSEV beat stiff competition to be crowned world champions in solo technical events

The World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 crowned its first artistic swimming champions today, when the men’s and women’s solo technical events were decided.

The women’s solo technical final was a hotly-contested one, with podium finishers all finishing with high-scoring routines.

World junior champion XU Huiyan (CHN) showed she is just as strong in the senior ranks, taking gold in dominant fashion with a score of 272.9917.

Vasilina Khandoshka (NAA) made up for the disappointment of finishing fourth at the 2024 edition of the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, finishing with silver (260.5416). Iris TIO CASAS (ESP) completed the podium with 260.2917.

In the men’s solo technical final, men’s artistic swimming veteran Aleksandr MALTSEV (NAB) claimed his first individual world title. The 30-year-old scored 251.7133 to take gold in the 13-strong field.

Dennis GONZALEZ BONEU (ESP) took silver with 241.1667, while Diego VILLALOBOS CARRILO (MEX) was third with 238.1600.

Earlier in the day, the team free preliminary round got underway, with defending world champions China earning the top score of 338.2167.

Spain qualified second (329.4288) with the best artistic impression score of the day, while Japan qualified third with 327.9186. Other teams in the top 12 include the United States of America, Mexico, and notably, a team of juniors in Chile.

Meanwhile, the open water swimming competition at the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 concluded on Sunday (20 July) with the mixed 4x1500m relay event taking place at Sentosa. Germany took gold in 1hr 9min 13.3sec, anchored by Florian WELLBROCK who won the men’s 3km knockout, 5km and 10km titles earlier this week. Italy finished second in 1:09:15.4, while Hungary clinched bronze in 1:09:16.7.

Singapore’s quartet comprising Chantal LIEW, Artyom LUKASEVITS, Kate ONA and Russel PANG finished in 14th place with their time of 1:15:39.
