In a fitting celebration of the return of the Singapore Festival of Football, European heavyweights Arsenal FC and AC Milan are set to clash in a blockbuster fixture on 23 July at the National Stadium. The highly anticipated match marks Arsenal’s return to Singapore for the first time since 2018 and AC Milan’s historic first-ever visit to the Lion City, making it a monumental occasion for local football fans and followers across the Southeast Asian region.
For Arsenal, the occasion carries added emotional weight. The club’s manager and former captain Mikel Arteta, who lifted the Premier League Asia Trophy in Singapore a decade ago, leads the Gunners back onto the same stage, now as a leader from the touchline.
Mikel Arteta appeared energised and optimistic as he addressed the media ahead of the upcoming season. The squad, fresh from an intense week of training in Spain, had landed in Singapore to a rousing reception. “The mood has been very good,” Arteta said. “We’re super excited about what lies ahead.”
The Spaniard spoke glowingly of the new signings, highlighting how they have already elevated the group. “It’s a new dream again,” he said. “We’ve brought in some very important players, and everyone feels the need to raise the level again. We’re excited about that challenge.”
On the tactical and psychological development of the team, Arteta noted the importance of maintaining belief after narrowly missing out on titles in recent seasons. “The players know how good they are. It’s about getting the basics right, making the right decisions, and giving ourselves the best chance to succeed. That’s our daily job.”
Arteta singled out Martín Zubimendi, one of the marquee signings, praising his character and football intelligence. “It was a long process to get him here, but once you work with him daily, you see why we were so keen.”
While keeping coy on rumours about Victor Lloris, Arteta reaffirmed that the transfer window remains active. “We’re a bit short in numbers, and we’re always looking. But right now, I’m pleased with the group we have.”
He reiterated the club’s commitment to developing young talent: “The door is open. Whoever trains the hardest and performs will get their chance.”
Addressing questions on Thomas Partey, who is now facing legal challenges and no longer with the club, Arteta stood by Arsenal’s handling of the situation. “These matters are complex. But I’m confident the club followed all the right processes.”
Arteta also expressed high hopes for Riccardo Calafiori, who is looking for a breakthrough year after injuries hampered his first season. “He brings energy and unpredictability. We missed that. Hopefully, this year we’ll see the best of him.”
Reflecting on his return to Singapore, Arteta said, “I never imagined I’d be back here as manager. It brings back great memories, and hopefully we can give the fans something special.”
He praised the club’s transfer work so far, applauding the efforts of technical director Edu and the board. “We’re on track. It’s exciting, not stressful. Everyone is aligned—the board, the ownership, the staff.”
Injury updates included good news: Gabriel and William Saliba have both returned to training and look in shape. “Gabriel especially is showing his maturity and commitment with his new contract. It’s great to have him back.”
When asked about Arsenal’s growing number of signings from Chelsea, Arteta smiled. “They’ve had some great players. But for us, it’s about the right fit, not the badge on the previous shirt.”
Meanwhile, AC Milan’s head coach Massimiliano Allegri made his return to Asia in his second spell at the helm of the Rossoneri. Alongside him, England international defender Fikayo Tomori offered a player’s perspective as Milan eyes a bounce-back season.
“Last season didn’t go as we hoped,” said Tomori. “We’re working hard to make sure this one does. Preseason has been tough—lots of running and tactical work—but also enjoyable. We’re learning a new way of playing under the coach.”
Tomori pointed to an upcoming test against Arsenal as an important opportunity to implement the team’s new tactical philosophy. “We’ve been focusing on where to press, how to build from the back, and the defensive shape. It’s been intense, but really good.”
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Tomori admitted it’s on his mind. “Every player wants to play for their country, and the World Cup is the ultimate dream. I spoke to Gareth Southgate recently—he told me to keep improving. If I do well for Milan, I believe I’ll have a strong chance.”
Allegri, meanwhile, emphasized that the team is rebuilding with clear priorities. “Milan must play in Europe. That’s our target. Not being in the Champions League this season is painful, but it gives us the time to build something stronger.”
Allegri expressed excitement about the arrival of Luka Modrić, who joins the squad on August 4. “He’s a champion. Technically and mentally. He’ll set an example.”
Discussing the team’s mindset, Allegri remained focused: “Whether last season was good or bad, we start fresh. The players are good. The staff is ready. We must move forward.”
On the transfer market, Allegri noted that reinforcements are still being sought. “The club is working hard behind the scenes. I’m focused on the players I have now, and I’m confident in their quality. We just need to be ready by August 17 when we face Bari in the Coppa Italia.”
He also acknowledged the physical toll of training in Singapore’s tropical climate but noted that adaptation is part of preparation. “We can’t change the weather—but we can adapt, work hard, and make the most of this opportunity.”
Both coach and player praised the atmosphere in Singapore. “We’ve had an amazing welcome,” Tomori said. “The support from fans across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore is incredible.”
As Arsenal and AC Milan prepare to collide at the National Stadium, the stakes may not be official, but the intent is clear: both clubs are looking to start their season strong, make a statement, and give back to their fans in Southeast Asia. The crowd is ready. The players are ready. All that remains is kickoff.
