Sports: China sweeps artistic swimming’s team events, Tio Casas wins third title; High diver Rhiannan Iffland wins fifth straight gold at Singapore 2025

China completed a clean sweep of team events, as artistic swimming at the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 came to a close on Friday (25 July).

ZHANG Yayi (CHN), still nursing a leg injury, returned to the Chinese squad to help them win the Team Acrobatic event. They were once again the top performers in both technical and artistic impression scores, finishing with 229.0186 to top the field.

Neutral Athletes B, a side with many juniors taking this stage for the first time, took silver with 224.7291. Spain completed the top three with a score of 221.0962.

Earlier in the day, Iris TIO CASAS (ESP) capped off a spectacular Singapore 2025 campaign as she partnered Dennis GONZALEZ BONEU (ESP) to narrowly win the Mixed Duet Free gold with a score of 323.8563.

This marks her third gold medal in Singapore, alongside three bronze medals, making for a sweet end to her Singapore 2025 outing.

Aleksandr MALTSEV and Olesia PLATONOVA (NAB), who clinched silver with 323.4438, were top until TIO CASAS and GONZALEZ BONEU snatched gold. Isabelle THORPE and Ranjuo TOMBLIN (GBR) were third with a score of 322.0583.

The artistic swimming competition has now concluded, with China finishing with four golds and three silvers. NAB finished with three golds, three silvers and two bronzes. Spain also had an outstanding campaign, taking three golds, two silvers and four bronzes.

The diving competition of the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 began today at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, with two titles up for grabs in the mixed 3m & 10m team and the women’s 1m springboard events.

Diving powerhouse China eased to gold in the mixed team event with a total of 466.25. With a squad boasting of members like CHEN Yiwen, CHEN Yuxi and CAO Yuan, each with multiple world and Olympic titles, the depth of the Chinese squad was undeniable.

Mexico, always a contender on the world stage, took silver with 426.30, while Japan surprised themselves with bronze (409.65).

In the women’s 1m springboard, Maddison KEENEY (AUS) ensured the title would remain with an Australian when she took gold with 308.00.

She beat China’s LI Yajie (CHN) to the top of the podium, after the 23-year-old, a former world champion in this event, took second place with 290.25. Chiara PELLACANI (ITA) put in a full day’s work in the pool, and ended with the reward of a bronze medal (270.80).

The diving competition continues on 27 July with the men’s 1m springboard preliminaries at 9am local time, before the mixed synchronised 10m platform final at 3pm and men’s 1m springboard final.

Meanwhile, high diver Rhiannan IFFLAND (AUS) clinched a record-extending fifth world title at the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025, dominating the field with her score of 359.25 on Saturday (26 July). Simone LEATHEAD (CAN) posted a total of 314.50 to take silver – her first world championships medal – and debutante Maya KELLY (USA), who is the youngest high diver at Singapore 2025 at age 18, won bronze with 310.00.

A new format is in place for the high diving event at Singapore 2025. Athletes perform four dives in the preliminary rounds, after which the top 14 progress to the finals where they complete two additional dives (Dives 5 and 6). The final scores comprise the results from Dives 1, 3, 5 and 6.

Entering Saturday’s final two rounds at Palawan Green, Iffland led the pack with the highest scores from Dives 1 and 3. She maintained that lead after Dive 5, ahead of Molly CARLSON (CAN) and Kaylea ARNETT (USA). Round 6 began after a two-hour delay due to inclement weather, which did not appear to rattle the 33-year-old Australian. With the start order reshuffled in ascending order of the divers’ scores, Leathead occupied the top spot until Iffland scored 102.60 in her final dive to seal a fifth consecutive victory.

The high diving action concludes on 27 July with the men’s final taking place at 11am at Sentosa.
