The AFC Champions League 2 group stage heats up as Singapore’s Tampines Rovers travel to the New Clark City Athletics Stadium to take on Kaya FC–Iloilo, the defending champions of the Philippines Football League. Both teams are chasing an early statement win on the continental stage.
Tampines Rovers head coach Noh Rahman believes his side are well-prepared after arriving in the Philippines earlier this week. “Preparation has been good. We played a league game before traveling out, and we’re ready to compete in this game,” Rahman said.
The Stags have enjoyed a promising start to the domestic season, lifting the Community Shield and registering back-to-back wins. Despite a recent change in the dugout, attacker Trent Buhagiar insists the transition has been seamless. “It’s been a good change. The style of play has remained consistent, and the squad has stuck together. We’ve started the season strongly, and we want to carry that momentum into this competition.”
Kaya FC–Iloilo enter the clash as the Philippines’ reigning champions, eager to prove themselves against one of Southeast Asia’s traditional heavyweights. While Tampines carry international pedigree, Rahman made it clear that his team will not underestimate their hosts. “In this competition, there will be no easy games. We have a lot of respect for Kaya and what they’ve achieved, but we also believe in our own ability,” he said.
Buhagiar echoed his coach’s words: “We know every game here will be tough, but we’re confident in our squad and our staff. We’re ready to go toe-to-toe with anyone.”
With rain in the forecast, pitch conditions may influence the tempo and tactics of the match. For Rahman, adaptability will be key. “The team that adjusts quickest to the environment will have the advantage. We hope the weather holds up, but we’ll be prepared to adapt.”
For Tampines, a winning start would reinforce their strong domestic form and provide a platform for progression in the group. For Kaya, defending home ground against a seasoned regional opponent would send a strong message about their continental ambitions.
With both sides hungry for a result, this promises to be a fiercely contested encounter under the lights at New Clark City.
Tampines Rovers faces Kaya FC–Iloilo on 18th September 2025 at New Clark City Athletics Stadium, Philippines. Kick-off is at 6pm.
