Sports: Singapore Under-22 National Team Squad announced for 2025 SEA Games

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today confirmed the final squad of 23 players who will represent the nation at the upcoming Thailand SEA Games, from 3-18 December 2025.

Initially drawn into Group C, Singapore has now been re-drawn into a three-team Group A, alongside hosts Thailand, and Timor-Leste. The change came about following Cambodia’s withdrawal from the men’s football tournament at the Games.

All Group A matches will be played in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The Singapore Under-22 side will kick off their campaign against Timor-Leste on 6 December at the Rajamangala Stadium and conclude the group stage against Thailand five days later. The three group winners and the best second-placed team across all groups will advance to the semi-finals.

This year’s squad features a notably youthful group, with 12 players eligible for the 2027 edition of the Games. Five of those players – all born in 2008 – will also be eligible to play in the 2029 Games that will be hosted in Singapore.

In addition to its youthful core, the squad also features several players who have already been exposed to senior international football during Singapore’s AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign.

Amir Syafiz earned his first two senior caps on the campaign trail, first against Maldives in a FIFA ‘A’ International ahead of the 2-1 win over Bangladesh in Group C of the qualifiers.

Fairuz Fazli, Jonan Tan, Ong Yu En and Raoul Suhaimi were also called up to the Lions’ squad during various international windows this year, gaining invaluable experience at the highest level.

Several others have featured regularly in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season: Raoul and Aqil Yazid have played every available minute (450 minutes) for the Young Lions, while Ong Yu En and Fairuz have averaged more than 70 minutes per match in the five games played so far.

Promising 17-year-old midfielder Nathan Mao – who clocked 321 minutes across four SPL appearances – is another young talent who is one to watch for the future.

“We’ve seen several of the younger boys step up throughout our preparations – in training and in the two matches in Dubai, and we believe they are ready to make the step up and contribute,” said Head Coach Firdaus Kassim.

“Bringing them into campaign squads will also help us accelerate their development, and that will only help our cause.”

Firdaus put his charges through a nine-day overseas training camp earlier this month (11-19 November) in Dubai, where they faced the under-22 sides of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iraq in high-intensity matches.

“For us, preparation matches are about performance, improvement and growth,” he said, of the efforts aimed at sharpening his squad for campaign football.

“We want to see clear progress in how we play, how we compete, and how we deal with difficult moments. If we get these things right, we’ll be moving in the direction we want – and we would have prepared ourselves for the tournament well.”

Captain Amir Syafiz echoed the sentiments of his coach, reflecting on gains made during the camp.

“The camp in Dubai taught us a lot about ourselves, and we’ve been pushing each other every day,” he said.

“As a group, our goal is simple – to represent Singapore with pride and commitment. We know what it means to wear the flag on our chests, and we want to make Singapore proud.”
