Tech Update: Four Leica M-Lenses Available as Coveted Product Variants

Leica has always understood that a camera system isn’t just a tool—it’s an object of desire. Its latest additions to the M-lens lineup lean into that philosophy, pairing proven optics with design treatments that speak directly to collectors and long-time Leica loyalists.

This season, the company unveils four special-edition lenses, each crafted in Germany and rooted in Leica’s legacy of precision engineering. Three of them arrive in a finish that has become something of a cult favourite: the olive-green Leica Safari design. The Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 ASPH., Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 ASPH. and Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. all adopt the rugged, matte green tone that first appeared on select M-cameras decades ago and has since become one of Leica’s most collectible aesthetics.

On these new Safari editions, the green exterior is paired with silver-chrome brass detailing, white metre markings and a pop of red on the feet scale—small touches that heighten the vintage-military mood while keeping everything unmistakably Leica. Behind the design flourish, the lenses remain true to their standard counterparts: fast, compact and versatile tools suited to reportage, wide-angle work or the everyday 50mm perspective.

For those who prefer gloss over grit, Leica has also prepared a different kind of classicism. The Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 from the brand’s Classic line appears in a deep glossy black paint finish, a look that’s long been cherished by collectors for how it ages. Frequent use gradually reveals hints of the brass beneath the lacquer, creating a patina unique to each lens. Paired with a traditional round metal hood—also painted gloss black—the lens feels like an artefact from Leica’s mid-century heyday, even as it delivers the creamy, wide-open rendering and signature bokeh that modern Summilux users expect.

The new designs are, unsurprisingly, positioned as premium offerings. The Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 ASPH. Safari retails at $9,550 including GST, while the Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 ASPH. Safari comes in at $7,700. The glossy black Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 is priced at $6,550. All three are already available through Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorised dealers worldwide.

A final Safari model—the Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH.—will follow slightly later, landing globally on 12 February 2026 at $8,300 including GST.

For Leica, these lenses are an invitation to own a small piece of the brand’s design heritage—functional, certainly, but also deeply tied to the emotional and aesthetic pleasures that keep the M-system thriving in a digital age.
