Sports: Lionesses set for Sabah training camp under new head coach Mihoko Ishida

Singapore Women’s National Team Head Coach Mihoko Ishida has called up a 20-player squad for her first training camp since taking charge, with the Lionesses set to travel to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for a camp that will include a closed-door friendly.

“I am looking forward to seeing my players in a competitive setting for the first time,” said Ishida. “This window is about building our foundation and understanding how we want to play as a team. Every player in this squad has been selected because I believe they can contribute to that process.”

“Selecting this squad was a process of careful observation,” she added. “I have watched the players closely — in training, in league matches, and in how they carry themselves as individuals. I wanted a group that not only has quality but also the right mentality to represent Singapore. Preparations have been progressing well and the players have shown great commitment since we began working together. There is a good energy in the camp and I am encouraged by what I have seen so far.”

Among the notable inclusions is the return of Venetia Lim, who — possessing 25 caps and one international goal to her name — has been sidelined since suffering a patella tendon injury in last June’s friendly against Hong Kong at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, a match that was ultimately cancelled.

Having spent time with Boroondara-Carey Eagles and Eltham Redbacks in Australia, she returned to Lion City Sailors at the start of this year.

Albirex defender Sara Merican also returns to the national setup after a five-year absence, last featuring in the 2021 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers in Tajikistan. Sara has since represented Singapore in cricket at the 2023 & 2025 SEA Games and spent the 2024–25 season with Wigan Athletic Women’s, winning the Lancashire Women’s County League in England.

The squad also includes several WPL players who have caught the eye this season: 17-year-old Geylang International forward Naureen Qadriyah, who tops her club’s scoring charts with eight goals; her teammate and defender Fathimah Shahrem; Still Aerion midfielder Bhanu Krishnasamy; and 17-year-old Albirex goalkeeper Talia Sachet.

Lionesses captain Rosnani Azman leads the side, with Farhanah Ruhaizat, Dhaniyah Qasimah and Nurhidayu Naszri among the experienced players retained in the squad.

This camp is an important opportunity for us to come together under Coach Mihoko and start building the way we want to play,” said Rosnani. “She has brought a clear idea of what she wants from us, and the players have responded well to her from the start. There are familiar faces and new ones in this squad, and part of my role as captain is to make sure everyone settles in quickly. The energy in camp has been good, and we are building well – moving in the right direction.

The Lionesses depart for Sabah on Monday, 13 April.
