Game On: Singapore gets ready for inaugural global eSports games

Singapore will play host to more than 100 of the world’s top esports players at the inaugural Global Esports Games, which will take place at Resorts World Sentosa on 18 and 19 December. The GEG will be a multi-title competition across Dota 2, eFootball 2022 and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. GEFcon, the Global Esports Federation’s international convention of esports thought leaders, will take place at the same time of the competition.

Eight DOTA 2 teams across two categories have qualified, including a Singapore team in both the Open and Women’s categories. Joining Singapore in both categories will be Great Britain and Mongolia, with Brazil and Paraguay in the Open and Women’s categories respectively. Street Fighter V: Champion Edition and eFootball 2022 finals feature players from across Africa, Asia, and South America, which each player having undergone national and regional qualifiers before making it to GEG.

Singapore’s Open team includes Wilson “Poloson” Koh Chin Wei who competed at the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines in 2019, when esports was featured at the event for the first time. Said Wilson: “Esports’ inclusion in the SEA Games was significant as it boosted visibility and gave the public a little more insight to what esports is about. I’m excited to compete on home soil and hopefully this will lead to more interest in esports, whether in DOTA 2 or the other two games, Streetfighter V and eFootball 2022.”

Outside of the Resorts World Convention Centre, GEFestival will bring the excitement to the heart of Singapore, with Orchard Cineleisure hosting 400 fans to watch the action from GEG, and renowned Singaporean street artist Antz will be creating a mural inspired by GEG titles.

The Global Esports Games will not only provide great opportunities for players to display their skills at the competition, but also allow those in the esports industry to learn from one another through mutual exchanges at GEFcon.”
