Shopping: City Square Mall Unveils S$50 Million Revamp with First-of-its-kind Community Wellness Facility, Enhanced Green Spaces and Expanded F&B Offerings

Something new is unfolding in the heart of Farrer Park. After nearly three years of transformation, City Square Mall has unveiled a S$50 million refresh that promises to redefine the neighbourhood shopping experience. The redevelopment isn’t simply about new shops or refreshed interiors, it signals a bigger vision: turning the mall into a vibrant community hub where sustainability, wellness and everyday life intersect. When the mall first opened in 2009, it made history as Singapore’s first eco-mall.

Now, its newly completed Asset Enhancement Initiative (AEI) marks the start of a new chapter, one that blends retail, green living and social connection in ways rarely seen in a shopping destination. And visitors are about to discover a lot more than just a place to shop. Interestingly, the site itself carries a long legacy of entertainment and community life. Before City Square Mall stood here, the area was once home to the iconic New World Amusement Park, a beloved entertainment hub that operated from 1923 to 1987. Today’s transformation echoes that same spirit, creating a lively destination where people gather, experience and connect.

One of the most significant additions is CONNECT @ City Square Mall, a first-of-its-kind wellness and social support space integrated within a retail environment. Developed together with the National Council of Social Service, the 15,000 sq ft facility brings together five social service agencies under one roof, offering services ranging from counselling and family support to programmes that promote mental wellbeing and strengthen family relationships. From parenting workshops to early support programmes for children and youths, the space aims to become a welcoming first-stop support network for families in the neighbourhood. It reflects a growing shift in how malls are evolving into places where communities gather, connect and find support.

Food lovers will also have plenty to look forward to. The revamped mall introduces a refreshed tenant mix with 21 unique brands and concepts, many making their debut in the area. The newly created Gastro Square on Level 4 anchors the dining experience, a sprawling 24,000 sq ft food destination offering cuisines from around the world. Among the highlights are Vietnamese dishes by acclaimed chef Vo Quoc, traditional Sichuan flavours from Xiao Jiao Tian, and casual favourites like Sanook Kitchen, The Fat Sparrow and Daydream Desserts. Designed as a lively social hub, Gastro Square goes beyond dining. The space will host live performances, workshops and community events, transforming it into an energetic gathering place where visitors can linger well into the evening. Meanwhile, the mall’s food court has relocated to Basement 3 with a retro-inspired design, adding a touch of nostalgia that nods subtly to the site’s historic past.

Beyond the indoor refresh, the transformation extends outdoors. The mall’s integrated City Green park, a 49,000 sq ft urban green space, has been revitalised with refreshed landscaping, communal areas and two nature-inspired playgrounds designed for children and families. Community pop-ups, seasonal markets and local vendor fairs will continue to animate the space, turning it into a lively outdoor extension of the mall. Sustainability has also been embedded into the redevelopment itself. Upcycled materials now appear throughout the interiors, from decorative finishes made using bamboo chopsticks, PET bottles and bubble wrap to benches crafted from repurposed handrails removed during renovation works.

The green efforts continue with the expanded CDL MicroForest, a compact urban forest designed to support biodiversity and moderate urban heat in high-density environments. Nearby, families can also explore the CDL EcoTrain, Singapore’s first decommissioned SMRT train cabin repurposed into an interactive climate education hub where eco-workshops for children and youths are regularly held.

On the rooftop, the Singapore Sustainability Academy continues to promote climate education and collaboration between businesses, communities and the public. City Square Mall is also working towards becoming the first shopping mall in Singapore to be certified under the Eco Spaces framework by the Singapore Environment Council by 2026, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to green innovation.

Adding a playful touch to these efforts is the debut of Eco Mama, the mall’s cheerful green globe mascot encouraging eco-friendly habits. Visitors can also take part in an Eco Stamp Rally, discovering sustainability features around the mall while collecting stamps and redeeming rewards. The transformation also introduces a refreshed brand identity, redesigned interiors inspired by organic forms and lily pads, and new communal spaces including Green Square, Discovery Square and Gastro Square. Together, these changes mark the evolution of City Square Mall into something far beyond a traditional shopping destination.

“Asset rejuvenation is a key pillar of our enhancement strategy to optimise operational performance and unlock value. City Square Mall now offers a more dynamic retail experience, with vibrant spaces and a refreshed tenant mix,” said Mr Sherman Kwek, Group Chief Executive Officer of City Developments Limited. “With the transformation of the Farrer Park precinct, we have taken the bold step to transform City Square Mall into a community hub integrated with first-of-its-kind wellness facilities to support families.”

“The completion of our AEI marks a significant milestone for City Square Mall. The refreshed mall now offers an expanded and diversified tenant mix, including enhanced F&B and 6 lifestyle offerings, specific clusters catering to kids, home & living, athleisure and others. There are also thoughtfully designed community spaces such as CONNECT @ City Square Mall and the refreshed City Green park. Aside from spaces, our shoppers can continue to expect and participate in a variety of community-focused programming,” said Ms Callie Yah, CDL’s Executive Vice President and Head of Global Asset Management Division.

With expanded green areas, new dining concepts, wellness facilities and spaces designed for gathering, the mall is positioning itself as a lively neighbourhood hub where shopping, sustainability and community life come together. And for visitors returning to Farrer Park, the experience may feel both familiar, and entirely new.
