Sports: Gavin Lee announces 28-man Lions squad for June FIFA window

Men’s National Team Head Coach Gavin Lee today announced his 28-man squad for the upcoming June FIFA International Window, as the Lions prepare to take on Mongolia and China PR at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Singapore will face Mongolia on Sunday, 31 May 2026, before hosting China PR five days later on Friday, 5 June 2026. Both matches will kick off at 7.30pm.

The fixtures come on the back of the Final Draw for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027, which saw Singapore drawn into Group D alongside Tajikistan, as well as FIFA World Cup-bound nations Australia and Iraq.

With clarity on their opponents for the continental showpiece, Lee believes the upcoming international window represents another important step in the team’s preparations.

“We are very proud for Singapore to be competing at the Asian Cup, and now that we know the teams we will be facing, it gives us more clarity and direction with our preparation and homework,” said Lee.

“Our focus does not change, it goes back to preparing well, maximising every window between now and the tournament; making sure we arrive at the Asian Cup in the best possible version of ourselves.”

Lee has opted to maintain a core group of players that has been central to the Lions’ recent progress, while also rewarding strong performances from players across the Singapore Premier League (SPL).

Among the notable recalls are Zulqarnaen Suzliman and Saifullah Akbar. Zulqarnaen earns his first call-up since March 2024 following an impressive second half of the season on loan at Albirex Niigata (S).

Interestingly, the 28-year-old’s last appearance for Singapore came against China PR during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers – a match in which he sustained a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that sidelined him for an extended period.

Meanwhile, Hougang United midfielder Saifullah returns to the National Team fold after a four-year absence, having enjoyed a strong campaign in the heart of midfield for the Cheetahs.

Looking ahead to the matches against Mongolia and China PR, Lee emphasised the importance of continuing to build momentum and standards within the squad.

“These are important preparation matches for us against two opponents who will provide different types of challenges,” Lee explained.

“Mongolia and China PR will both test us in different ways, and that is valuable for the team as we continue building towards our longer-term target of competing at the Asian Cup. At the same time, we also have the ASEAN Championship Hyundai Cup in a few months, so every camp and every match is an opportunity for us to continue improving as a group.”

Tickets for both matches are available for purchase via Ticketek and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) official website (https://fas.org.sg/tickets).
