Sports: Mihoko Ishida names preliminary squad for June international window

Singapore Women’s National Team Head Coach Mihoko Ishida has named a 31-player preliminary squad for the Lionesses’ upcoming international window, with the team set to travel to Indonesia for two friendly matches against the hosts and Cambodia.

It will be the first official ‘A’ internationals under Ishida since she was appointed as head coach in April.

The Lionesses, ranked 152nd in the world, will face 106th-ranked Indonesia on Wednesday, 3 June, 8pm Singapore time, before taking on 117th-ranked Cambodia on Saturday, 6 June, 7pm Singapore time. Both matches will be played at Stadion Arcamanik in Bandung.

Singapore go into both fixtures with recent history to draw on — a 3-1 defeat to Indonesia at last December’s 33rd SEA Games, and a narrow 1-0 loss to Cambodia at the 2023 edition.

For the 43-year-old Japanese coach, however, the window represents an important opportunity for her squad to prove themselves.

“First of all, I would like to thank Indonesia and Cambodia for giving us the opportunity to compete during this FIFA window. These matches are an important step in our preparation for the 2026 AFF Women’s Championship, she said.

“This window is a chance for us to take a closer look at the players in the squad. Every player has an opportunity, and I want them to show their strengths, compete, and prove themselves on the pitch. Our staff will support them so they can perform with confidence,” she added.

With a number of overseas-based players joining the centralised setup for the first time, Ishida is eager to see how the squad comes together.

“Compared to the previous window, we are also excited to welcome several overseas-based players into the team. In this short period together, we want to continue building the identity of the team and show the mentality we want heading into the AFF Women’s Championship,” she continued.

Among the notable call-ups is the return of striker Danelle Tan, who has been in outstanding form in Japan. Her club, Nippon TV Tokyo Verdy Beleza, reached the AFC Women’s Champions League (AWCL) Final — falling 1-0 to North Korea’s Naegohyang Women’s FC in a historic run for the Japanese club.

The 22-year-old, who scored her first goal for Beleza in a 1-0 AWCL group-stage win over Myanmar’s ISPE last November, reflected on the connection between her club and national team environments. “Coach Mihoko actually used to play with some of my teammates at Beleza, so it really is a very small world,” she said.

It is a familiarity she hopes to draw on as she returns to the national fold.

“I’ve learned and improved a lot training with the players there — not just on the field, where the level of training is incredibly high, but also off it, in the discipline that goes into preparing for every match and session. It’s always nice to be back home representing Singapore, and I’m hoping that together with the new coaching staff, we can continue to improve and raise the level of the women’s national team,” she added.

The squad also features a number of foreign-based players, several part of the Unleash the Roar! (UTR) scholarship programme, including Lamasan Chantale, the first goalkeeper to receive the scholarship, Seri Nurinsyirah, and Yasmine Zaharin, all three returning after their involvement in the SEA Games squad.

Also returning to the squad is 19-year-old forward Chloe Koh, who graduates from IMG Academy this month having made history as only the second Singaporean female footballer to compete in the NCAA Division I — earning an academic and athletic scholarship with St Bonaventure University in New York, the highest level of intercollegiate sport in the United States — following in the footsteps of Putri Syaliza, who represented Oakland University in 2023.

Putri herself is among the notable absentees, as she continues her recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of her knee and is expected to return in due course. Also unavailable for this window is experienced midfielder Lim Li Xian — who has earned more than 30 caps for Singapore — due to work commitments.

On the local front, the squad features players from across the Women’s Premier League (WPL), including Albirex Jurong captain and Lionesses stalwart Rosnani Azman, whose side currently leads the league, alongside Lion City Sailors duo Nur Ain Salleh and Farah Nurzahirah — the latter currently the league’s top local scorer with 16 goals this season.

Centralised training will begin on Monday, 25 May 2026, ahead of the squad being trimmed to a 23-player squad. The team will depart for Bandung on Sunday, 31 May.
