Sports: Lions squad announced for Mizuho Blue Challenge

Squad list for the Mizuho Blue Challenge featuring goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards, with player names listed under each position.

Singapore Men’s National Team Head Coach Gavin Lee has named the 24 players who will represent Singapore at the inaugural Mizuho Blue Challenge – The Kallang Football Series Singapore, which will take place from 13 to 17 November 2026.

The Lions will take on two South American sides, facing 33rd-ranked Paraguay on 13 November before meeting five-time world champions Brazil on 17 November.

Following the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s announcement that the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 will be postponed from January to December 2027, Lee acknowledged the importance of the decision while reiterating that the team’s preparations and approach to the upcoming matches remain unchanged.

“We understand the decision to postpone the tournament, and the safety and well-being of everyone involved – players, team officials and fans – must always come first. We will continue to respect the guidance of the relevant authorities as preparations continue.

“That said, our approach to these two matches remains unchanged. Paraguay and Brazil are two teams that regularly compete at the highest level of international football, and we know they will present a significant challenge. These are exactly the kind of tests we need as we continue to push ourselves, embrace the discomfort and work towards arriving at the Asian Cup as the best possible version of ourselves.”

The squad features several changes from the group that represented Singapore at the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with 21-year-old Woo Chun Wei earning his maiden senior call-up following a string of impressive performances in central midfield for Balestier Khalsa.

“Chun Wei has shown maturity and consistency in his performances for Balestier, particularly for a player of his age. He has adapted well to the demands of the league and shown that he can compete at this level.

“This will be an opportunity for him to experience the demands of international football, and we hope it will inspire him to keep learning, improving and building on the progress he has made,” Lee added.

Hougang United midfielder Saifullah Akbar and Geylang International defensive duo Joshua Pereira and Darren Teh also earn recalls, as Lee adjusts his options following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained by Lion City Sailors full-back Nur Adam Abdullah in his side’s victory over Young Lions on 11 October.

“It’s unfortunate that Nur Adam will be unavailable for the foreseeable future, and we wish him a smooth recovery. Injuries happen in football, and while we never want to lose a player in this way, it also creates opportunities for others to step up.

“We have players who can come in and contribute, and it is important that everyone is ready to take responsibility when called upon,” said Lee.

Other notable absentees include Thespa Gunma forward Ikhsan Fandi, who is unavailable due to injury, while Cardiff City defender Perry Ng is expecting the birth of his first child with his partner.

As the Lions prepare for two challenging encounters on home soil, Lee also highlighted the importance of support from Singapore fans.

“We know our previous campaign fell short of the standards we set for ourselves, and we understand the disappointment felt by our supporters. These matches will test us, but what matters is how we respond as a group, learn from the experience, and keep working to improve.

“We never take the support of our fans for granted, and we know that their trust is something we have to keep earning. We are committed to giving our best every time we step onto the pitch and showing through our performances what it means to represent Singapore,” Lee said.
