From Babi Pongteh to Ayam Buak Keluak, the most recognizable Peranakan cuisine often involves meat products of some kind. But as the years go by and palates and dietary preferences change, it becomes ever-more important to expand one’s offerings to become more inclusive.

With that in mind, Violet Oon Singapore has extended their Peranakan-inspired menu to now include plant-based and gluten-free dishes, to provide even more options for vegans and those with gluten-allergies can also enjoy.

“Over the years, Violet Oon Sigapore has seen a growing base of customers who are vegetarians or have increasingly taken to a more plant-based diet,” says Violet Oon Singapore chairman Manoj M Murjani. “The expansion of our plant-based menu is a natural follow-up to the introduction of meat alternatives to our repertoire over a year ago. We are delighted to be able to cater our Violet Oon Singapore signatures to more customers of varied dietary requirements and preferences.”

Having tried a selection of foods from the new menu, while there are some hits and misses, overall, the restaurant seems to be going in the right direction, with a wide enough , inclusive selection to meet the growing demand and for guests of all palates to enjoy.

Stand out dishes included the eggplant goreng dip with emping crackers. Served with a tangy, punchy eggplant goreng dip, the empeng crackers made for the perfect companion to this dish to whet our appetite.

The Kunyit Lemak King Oyster Mushrooms are a must order, with the ‘lemak’ turmeric-infused coconut sauce poured over a generous serving of king oyster mushrooms that were smooth and full of flavour.

The Jagung Bakar Pedas Manis was nicely chargrilled, giving it a smoky taste and aroma, while offering the saltiness of the feta cheese and the sprinkle of chilli.

Ending off with their Kueh Beng Kah was the perfect and only way to end the meal. Moist and flavourful, when the Kueh Beng Kah was dipped into the coconut sauce, it felt like a decadent finish to a satisfying meal. Thanks to the restaurant’s move towards becoming inclusive of even more diets, now, no one will miss out on the good food served up at Violet Oon Singapore!
These plant-based and gluten-free dishes will be offered exclusively at Violet Oon Singapore Satay Bar & Grill , located at 3B River Valley Rd, Singapore 179021. For more information and reservations, visit their website here Full plant-based menu available here
