What if finding your voice had less to do with speaking louder, and more to do with learning how to breathe, move and simply be present? That is the question Grand Hyatt Singapore is exploring this September and October, as Damai Spa & Fitness Centre turns its attention to the relationship between breath, body, presence and communication.
The hotel’s latest wellness programme brings Fitzmaurice Voicework® into a setting far beyond the traditional theatre studio, exploring how techniques originally developed for actors can help with everything from public speaking and presentations to leadership, confidence and everyday communication.
The programme begins with a Living Room Session on 10 September 2026, bringing together voice coach Petrina Kow, Fitzmaurice Voicework® teacher Dr Budi Miller, and award-winning actress Yeo Yann Yann for an evening exploring what actor training can teach us about authentic communication.
Then, in October, Petrina Kow returns to Damai House for a four-session Vocal Breathwork programme designed as a deeper, practice-led exploration of the methodology.
For many people, improving their voice is associated with projection, pronunciation or sounding more polished in front of an audience. Fitzmaurice Voicework® takes a different approach, where the practice looks at voice as something fundamentally embodied, examining the connections between breath, physical tension, nervous-system responses, imagination and language. While originally developed for actors, its principles have increasingly found applications in leadership, teaching, public speaking and professional communication.
That makes it an intriguing fit for Damai, Grand Hyatt Singapore’s integrated wellness destination, where the emphasis extends beyond physical recovery to include how people manage pressure, connect with others and move through everyday life.
“At Damai, we increasingly see wellbeing as something that extends beyond physical recovery into how people move through their everyday lives, manage pressure, connect with others, and feel present in themselves,” said Lily Tan, Damai Spa Manager, Grand Hyatt Singapore. “Voicework is a natural extension of that philosophy because the way we communicate is closely connected to how we breathe, inhabit our bodies, and respond in the moment. Through this programme, we hope to create another avenue for guests to reconnect with themselves and carry that greater sense of awareness into their personal and professional lives.”
For Petrina Kow, the starting point is not necessarily about manufacturing confidence, but understanding what is already happening in the body. “Many people think that finding their voice means sounding more confident or polished, but it starts with something much more fundamental, with how we breathe, inhabit our bodies, and respond under pressure,” said Petrina Kow, Regional Director (Southeast Asia) for the Fitzmaurice Institute. “Fitzmaurice Voicework helps us notice those patterns instead of fighting them. From there, the voice becomes more responsive, expressive, and true to who we are. Whether you are an actor, leader, or C-suite professional, it ultimately comes back to communicating as your authentic self.”
The first instalment, Living Room Session: Finding Your Voice, takes place on Thursday, 10 September, bringing the conversation into Grand Hyatt Singapore’s Grand Living Room. Moderated by Petrina, the evening brings together three people who approach voice and performance from very different perspectives.
Dr Budi Miller is Lead Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework® and Director of Advanced Training for the Fitzmaurice Institute, while Yeo Yann Yann brings decades of experience across theatre, television and film, most recently starring in Anthony Chen’s We Are All Strangers. Together with Petrina, they will explore how actor training develops awareness of breath, embodiment and presence, and how those principles can be translated into professional environments.
The discussion will consider the common ground between training an actor and preparing an executive or professional for a presentation. Rather than encouraging people to adopt a rehearsed persona, the focus is on using voice techniques to communicate with greater clarity, confidence and emotional authenticity while remaining connected to oneself.
The evening will also move beyond conversation. Following the panel, Petrina will lead guests through a short participatory voice and embodiment exercise, giving attendees an opportunity to experience the work before an audience Q&A and a chance to meet the speakers.
The session runs from 6pm to 9pm, with the panel beginning at 7pm, at 10|SCOTTS, Grand Hyatt Singapore. Tickets are priced at SGD 55++ per person, inclusive of Grand Happy Hour Indulgence.
Guests can also opt for beverage packages priced at SGD 50++ per adult, including selected red wine, white wine, rosé wine and draught beer, or SGD 70++ per adult, including Moët & Chandon Impérial Brut Champagne alongside selected wines and draught beer.
For those who want to go beyond the introductory session, Vocal Breathwork with Petrina Kow returns to Damai House in October following its inaugural eight-week run in 2025. This year’s programme has been condensed into four four-hour sessions, structured as a sequential exploration of Fitzmaurice Voicework®. The journey moves through four interconnected pillars: Destructuring, Restructuring®, Presence and Play — beginning with awareness and release before moving towards practical communication.
Session One: Destructuring® — Undoing and Being
4 October 2026 | 2:30pm–6:30pm
The programme begins by looking at habitual patterns of muscular tension and breath holding. Through Dynamic Efforts and Tremorwork®, participants explore how sound occurs throughout the body and how releasing unnecessary effort can allow breath and voice to become more spontaneous and responsive.
Session Two: Restructuring® — Building the Foundation
11 October 2026 | 2:30pm–6:30pm
The second session focuses on reconnecting breath with vocal support. Participants explore the relationship between abdominal support, breathing, resonance and communication through individual, partner and small-group exercises.
Session Three: Presence — Permission, Presence and Power
25 October 2026 | 2:30pm–6:30pm
The focus shifts from mechanics to communication. Participants examine what it means to hold a room while remaining connected to themselves and their audience, working with nervous-system responses associated with speaking and performance alongside vocal variety, storytelling and intentional communication.
Session Four: Play — Application to Text, Song and Speech
1 November 2026 | 2:30pm–6:30pm
The final session brings the earlier techniques together through speech, text and song. Participants explore range, flexibility and spontaneity before developing an individualised practice that can be applied to presentations, storytelling, auditions, performance or everyday communication.
With participation capped at 20 guests, the programme is designed to remain intimate and practice-led. Each session also includes Afternoon Tea from Oasis, served at Damai House, as well as a complimentary four-hour parking coupon and one hour of access to Damai’s spa and hydrothermal facilities before or after the workshop.
There is something increasingly relevant about approaching communication as a wellness practice. For professionals accustomed to spending their days in meetings, presentations and high-pressure environments, the ability to recognise physical tension, regulate breathing and remain present can be just as useful as learning how to structure a presentation or deliver a pitch.
That is the wider thinking behind Damai’s evolving approach to contemporary wellbeing. Rather than limiting wellness to treatments, fitness or recovery, the destination is exploring how physical awareness can influence the way people communicate, work and engage with others.
Located within Grand Hyatt Singapore’s Terrace Wing, Damai brings together spa therapies, movement, fitness and recovery. Its facilities include a 400-square-metre Fitness Centre with a HYROX-accredited training zone, Damai House for yoga, Pilates and mind-body programming, a 25-metre swimming pool, wellness pool and outdoor hydrothermal circuit. Vocal Breathwork adds another dimension to that offering, where it offers an opportunity to become more aware of how you already inhabit your body and voice.
For those looking to speak with greater confidence, lead with more presence, or simply become more aware of how breath and body influence everyday life, Grand Hyatt Singapore’s latest wellness offering proposes an interesting idea: perhaps the most authentic voice is not one we need to create, but one we learn to uncover.
