Performance testing is no longer reserved for elite athletes. As Singapore’s running and endurance sports community continues to grow, more everyday athletes are turning to sports science to train smarter, recover better and improve race-day performance.
Responding to this growing demand, UFIT Singapore has expanded its sports science offerings with two new performance assessments—Lactate Threshold Testing and Sweat Testing—bringing its suite of performance screening services to five. The new services join UFIT’s existing Advanced Running Consultation, VO₂ Max Assessment and Physical Performance Screening, giving runners and endurance athletes access to laboratory-grade performance testing once available primarily to professionals.
From marathon runners and triathletes to HYROX competitors and cyclists, Singapore’s recreational athletes are increasingly embracing data-driven training. Wearable technology, personalised coaching and structured training plans have become commonplace, with sports science now playing an important role in helping athletes maximise every training session.
UFIT’s latest performance tests are designed to help athletes better understand how their bodies respond to exercise, allowing them to make more informed decisions about training intensity, pacing, hydration and recovery.

One of the biggest challenges for runners is knowing how hard they should be training. UFIT’s Lactate Threshold Test measures blood lactate levels during a progressive exercise test to identify an individual’s aerobic threshold, anaerobic threshold and personalised training zones. Rather than relying solely on heart-rate estimates or perceived effort, athletes receive objective physiological data that can be used to optimise training intensity and pacing.
According to Khai Jamilson, Lead Sport & Exercise Scientist at UFIT, many recreational athletes spend too much time training at the wrong intensity, limiting performance gains while increasing fatigue. By accurately identifying personalised training zones, the Lactate Threshold Test helps runners make easy runs truly easy and hard sessions appropriately challenging—allowing for more effective training and improved endurance over time.
The assessment is particularly suited for those preparing for marathons, triathlons, HYROX competitions and other endurance events, as well as runners who have plateaued despite consistent training.

Hydration is another key factor affecting athletic performance, particularly in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. While electrolyte drinks have become increasingly popular, hydration needs differ significantly from one athlete to another. Sweat rate, sodium loss, exercise intensity and environmental conditions all influence how much fluid an individual should replace during training or racing.
UFIT’s Sweat Test measures sweat rate, fluid loss and sweat sodium concentration during a 30- to 45-minute treadmill assessment. The data is then analysed to develop personalised hydration and electrolyte recommendations tailored to each athlete’s physiology.
These insights can help athletes better prepare for long training sessions, endurance races and competitions held in hot and humid conditions. Ellie Cheale, Head Dietitian at UFIT, notes that personalised hydration strategies can help athletes replace the right amount of fluid and sodium based on their individual sweat profile rather than relying on generic recommendations.

Beyond testing, UFIT combines performance data with coaching, physiotherapy and nutrition support through its multidisciplinary “Circle of Care” approach. Each assessment is interpreted by UFIT’s team of sport and exercise scientists, coaches, physiotherapists and dietitians, ensuring athletes receive practical recommendations they can apply directly to their training programmes.
This integrated approach allows recreational athletes to use objective performance data not simply to measure fitness, but to improve running efficiency, reduce injury risk and support long-term progression.
As endurance sports continue to gain popularity in Singapore, access to professional-grade performance testing is becoming increasingly valuable for everyday athletes.
Both the UFIT Lactate Threshold Test and UFIT Sweat Test are available from S$250 per session. Athletes looking for a more comprehensive evaluation can also choose from UFIT’s performance bundles, which combine multiple assessments—including the Advanced Running Consultation, VO₂ Max Assessment, Physical Performance Screening and the new tests—at savings of up to 20%.
For runners, HYROX competitors and endurance athletes looking to move beyond guesswork, UFIT’s expanded sports science services reflect a growing trend towards evidence-based training that helps athletes perform at their best.
